SAN MATEO – Today, in celebration of Black History Month, the San Mateo County Event Center announced its sponsorship of a mobile museum to highlight the rich history of the African American community.
The exhibit is part of the Domini Hoskins Black History Museum & Learning Center, and showcases a range of cultural artifacts to educate and inform our communities, especially our youth, about the rich history that African Americans have contributed to American society.
The exhibit will be opened to the public February 7th – February 27th at 890 Jefferson Avenue in Redwood City. The San Mateo Event Center will also highlight the exhibit during its annual County Fair June 4th -12th, 2022.
“San Mateo County has a rich and diverse history, and it is important that as an event and exposition center we highlight the significant contributions of black community,” said Dana Stoehr, the San Mateo County Event Center and Fair CEO. “Supporting Black History is something we always embrace, and we are proud to sponsor this exhibit.”
The museum’s founder and director, Carolyn Hoskins, decided to name this year’s exhibit at the fair the “American History Museum” because it’s not just Black History; it’s American History.
In partnership with the San Mateo Historical Society, the expanded exhibit includes a display dedicated to Japanese Americans who lived in internment camps in San Mateo County during World War II. Recently, the museum was also recognized by the Western Fairs Association (WFA) and received the 1st Place Award and the Judge’s Choice in the “New Fair time event, exhibit or Program” division.
“San Mateo County Event Center gets it,” added Hoskins. “They understand the importance of diversity and Black History, and with their partnership and the County Fair, we are able to provide this opportunity for all Peninsula residents and visitors.
In addition to this exhibit the County Fair will further highlight the Peninsula’s diversity by hosting Día de la Feria, Pacific Islands Day, Family PRIDE Day and reaching out to many diverse groups, inviting them to be part of our fair programs.
ABOUT THE SAN MATEO COUNTY EVENT CENTER: The San Mateo County Event Center welcomes over 500,000 attendees annually, hosting huge events such as the San Mateo County Fair and Maker Faire, as well as corporate events, consumer shows, festivals, and community events. The San Mateo County Event Center is also a proud sponsor of many community events such as Samaritan House Holiday Gift Drive, Seniors on the Move, community job fairs, and emergency services training.
While the San Mateo County Event Center has been limited in hosting most events due to the pandemic, they have played a vital role in protecting our health care workers and vulnerable populations by serving as a COVID-19 testing site, operations hub, and supply center, 250-bed temporary overflow hospital, and vaccine distribution center for the San Francisco Bay Area. To date, the Event Center has hosted our community to receive over 250,000 COVID-19 tests and over 260,000 COVID-19 vaccinations.
